As such, they must be learned and memorized one at a time. An exceptional example is the verb "be", where the present tense is "am", "are" or "is" and the past tense is "was" or "were". That said, the verb "be" is unique, and all the other irregular verbs are much simpler in their conjugation.
English verbs may be categorised in four main classes: primary verbs, full verbs, modal verbs and secondary auxiliary verbs.

Verb is the term used to denote a word which, in association with a subject, affirms, negates or questions a situation. The situation may be:

(1) A state, something that is conceived of as existing, rather than happening, and as being homogeneous, continuous and unchanging throughout its duration (verbs: BE, SEEM);

(2) a process, a dynamic happening extended in time (verbs: CHANGE, DEVELOP);

(3) an event, a momentary happening (VERBS: EXPLODE, SNEEZE);

(4) an action, a happening under the control of an agent (verbs: RUN, WRITE)[1]

Verbs carry markers of grammatical categories such as tense, aspect, mood, person and number.

English verbs may be categorised in four main classes: primary verbs, full verbs, modal verbs and secondary auxiliary verbs.
