Giving directions is a transactional language function.

This is used in response to someone asking for directions.

We use both body language (i.e. pointing and demonstration), and may demonstrate using a map.

Giving directions in English may be required even in non-English speaking countries, if English is used as a lingua franca; e.g. if a German traveller needs directions in Spain, if they cannot speak Spanish they may ask in English.
