A correlation coefficient is a quantified measure of correlation.[1]

The unqualified term “correlation coefficient” usually implies the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, R. However, other coefficients are available, including the point-biserial correlation coefficient (which is a special form of Person’s R), and Spearman’s rank-difference correlation.

The value always lies between −1 and 1. A positive value indicates a positive correlation; a negative value indicates a negative correlation; zero indicates no correlation.
