Particle
From Teflpedia
A particle (/pɑ:tɪkəl/) is a word that performs a grammatical function, but is not categorised into one of the major parts of speech.[1][2]
It’s somewhat of a wastebasket category, and linguists argue about its remit.
English has particles:
- An infinitive particle, to, (when forming part of a to-infinitive)
- Polar particles, including yes, no and not (in traditional grammar, these are adverbs).
