A velar consonant is a consonant sound made with the velum (soft palate) as the place of articulation.

In English, using English standard phonemes, there are three velar consonants of these; the velar stops, /k/ and /g/, respectively unvoiced velar stop and voiced velar stop, and the voiced velar nasal /ŋ/.
