A trinomial /ˈtraɪˈnəʊˌmɪəl/ is a type of polynomial with three elements, for example "hook, line and sinker" or "lock, stock and barrel", "eat, drink and be merry", etc.

These tend to be fixed phrases, so they cannot be changed. For example, we say "hook, line and sinker" rather than %"sinker, line and hook".
