Pyramid translation is a translation activity that can be used. The idea is to start with a simple sentence, and gradually build up the complexity of the sentence.

For example, students could be asked to translate the following into their L1:

  • Yesterday
  • Yesterday I went to the library.
  • At 2 o'clock yesterday I went to the school library.
  • At 2 o'clock yesterday I went to the school library and I borrowed a book.
  • At 2 o'clock yesterday I rode my bike to the school library where I borrowed a book on animals.
  • etc.
