A placement test (/pleɪsmən(t )test/), sometimes level-placement test is a test designed to determine a student's proficiency level of English. These are typically administered before a student starts a course, so that the students can be grouped into classes according to ability.
These can be done on a computer or with pen and paper.
They are low-stakes tests because any invalidity or unreliability in them can usually be rectified later by moving an overperforming or underperforming student into a different class. They also can be reused, unlike other types of exams.
Because the purpose is to place students into classes, gradation of the tests can be fairly coarse, though excessively fine gradation is not necessary.
