Given that having special character insertion panels for stuff like IPA would be very useful here, shouldn't we add that? Phantom Hoover 21:09, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Needs Extension:CharInsert Nx 21:13, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Damn. It would make sense, though... Phantom Hoover 21:30, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
This looks like a pretty simple extension to add. I note it uses Java script. Will adding it increase my bandwith usage (much)?--Bob M 17:47, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
I'd wait until you're on your next month's allocation: better safe than sorry. Presumably every time anyone edits it'll get downloaded so it'll add up. Toast 17:55, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, definitely wait until us lot have abandoned ye. Can it be done in a hide/show fashion where it is not downloaded until "show" is clicked? Human 21:34, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, first of next month I'll be on new rations so I can set it up then. I must admit that I don't really understand the "show/hide" suggestion.--Bob M 22:17, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, you've seen various "collapsible" boxes on various wikis, right? I think usually they are js, and download everything right off the bat, but if the IPA character box was first presented "closed" - and not loaded, most of the time there'd be no real load. And if someone needed it they'd click "open" or "show" and it would download and expand. Not sure how easy that would be to do, but on computers you can do anything, right? Collapsible boxes don't reduce download; it's there but not shown. In fact they make it worse by adding script to the page. Toast 00:55, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I know that's how they usually work, yes, but how about writing a version that doesn't download until requested? Human 01:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Heh! It's called a hyperlink. Toast 01:07, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Charinsert

Now that the bandwidth's no longer a problem can we install it. Phantom Hoover 18:17, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

No problem at all. :-) This is probably a silly question - but what will it do for us?--Bob M 18:56, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
It gives you the little characters below the edit box that insert themselves into the text when clicked. Very useful when using non-Latin alphabets. Phantom Hoover 13:51, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah. This would be for IPA?--Bob M 14:02, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
And if anyone who knows Russian or Greek shows up. Phantom Hoover 18:52, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Actually I put "English only" somewhere in the rulz sometime after I started to get foreign language spam. Looking at the RW box I see it's got a load of extra stuff including the IPA - I suppose we could limit it to IPA? Or would the other language stuff serve some function other than filling up the box? At the moment it's got just the bare minimum, and I wouldn't want to overload it.--Bob M 19:20, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
You would know better than me which characters you need, but I had the IPA in mind. Phantom Hoover 19:53, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
