A language skill is a skill that involves language. Traditionally, these consist of the four language macroskills; speaking, listening, reading and writing in any given language, plus various other language microskills.

Listening and reading are receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills.

Many teachers, and particularly, coursebooks, try to include a mixture of these skills in every class.

Many sources refer to “a fifth skill,” though authorities disagree on what exactly that is.
