Language shift is the process whereby a community of speakers of a language shifts to speaking a completely different language, usually over an extended period of time.[1]

The most obvious examples involving English involve English mostly replacing Welsh and Irish.

There is speculation that English may in a few generations replace Icelandic,[2] Dutch[3] and possibly others. This is likely to result in language politics.
