An irregular verb is a verb that is irregular. In English there are two types of irregular verbs; full modal verbs along with the semi-modal verb "ought" form one group; the other, much larger group consisting of irregular lexical verbs. The term "irregular verb" is often applied just to the latter larger group; we prefer the more specific and explicit term "irregular lexical verb".

Contrast regular verb - note that in English, all regular verbs are regular lexical verbs. Some verbs can also be ambiregular verbs, that is they have both regular and irregular forms.
