India (//) is a large country in southern Asia.

English is an official language in India, though it's only spoken as a native language by a few, mainly members of the economic elite and members of the Anglo-Indian community. It is however widely used as a lingua franca in business, academia and the law as a means of communication between speakers of different Indian languages. There is a lot of language politics. There is a need for business English and Legal English.

Within India, English is generally taught as a second language, rather than a foreign language. There are few expatriate English teachers working in India.
