A Germanic language is a memmber of the Germanic language family, which is a language family which consists of languages related to modern German, notably English, but also Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, and a few other languages of historical or local interest.

Although English is a Germanic language, it is more a cousin to rather than a sibling of the other languages in the family.
