**Exam techniques** are, unsurprisingly, techniques which help students to pass exams. If students are studying for exams such as the University of Cambridge ESOL exams then a significant amount of class time may be taken up with studying and practising these techniques.

This is presumably desirable if the students' only objective is to obtain a formal qualification; but would seem to be less justified for students whose objective is to learn to use the language effectively.
