A counting song is a song, typically a nursery rhyme, that practises the key skill of counting.[1]

They can count forwards, backwards, or both.

Examples include "One, Two Three, Four, Five, Once I Caught a Fish Alive" (counting forwards), "Five Little Ducks" (counting backwards), "Five Little Monkeys" (counting backwards), "Ten Green Bottles" (counting backwards). "Ten Little Indians" (unfortunately somewhat racist) counts both forwards and backwards (replace "Indians" with "Teddy Bears" or "soldier boys").
