A communication strategy is a "systematic technique employed by a speaker to express his [or her] meaning when faced with some difficulty"[1]

Poor or mediocre second language speakers with good communication strategies often communicate much better than those with better technical language ability, but who adopt poor communication strategies. Consequently, communication strategies may be taught and practised, though their teachability is questioned by some.

There are various taxonomies for atomising communication strategies, and some strategies may overlap.

Dörnyei [2] provides twelve common communication strategies, divided into three categories.
