Australian English

From Teflpedia

Australian English (AusE) is a regional dialect of English spoken in Australia. A variety of Commonwealth English, it has three major dialect subgroups: Standard Australian English (SAusE); Aboriginal English and ethnocultural Australian English varieties.

It is relatively new - just over 200 years old - and originated in the early colony in Sydney.[1]

In terms of accents, these range from the most local, Broad Australian, to an intermediate category, General Australian and, at the other extreme, a more British English variation, Cultivated Australian.[2]

The vowel system of BAusE is very similar to that of Cockney.[3]. See Phonemic chart of Australian vowels.
