From Teflpedia

An alphabet (/ælfəbet/) is a set of letters or other signs or signals that serve as equivalents for letters. English uses the Latin alphabet.

Be careful not to confuse vowels - which refer to sounds - with the vowel letter, which is what corresponds to the letter in the alphabet. Likewise, don't let students confuse consonants with consonant letters, ie, the consonant letters of the alphabet.

The Braille system used by blind people uses raised dots to represent letters and numbers.
