-ate

-ate (/ˈeɪt/) is an English suffix. It can be both a verb suffix and an adjective suffix.

Examples include appropriate.

Note that as verb suffix, this is stressed, e.g. /əˌprəʊpri:ˈeɪt/ but as an adjective it is unstressed, e.g. /əˈprəʊprɪət/. This morpheme remains stressed if the suffix -tion is added.

There are plenty of words that end in -ate that do not contain this morpheme, e.g. spate, plate, crate, etc.
