X-SAMPA

From Teflpedia

X-SAMPA (Extended Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet) is an extension of SAMPA (Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet), a system designed for phonetic transcription using ASCII characters. Developed by John C. Wells in 1995, X-SAMPA aims to provide a one-to-one mapping to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) while being easily typed on a standard QWERTY keyboard, which makes it especially useful for computational linguistics and digital text processing.

However, with the advent of Unicode and widespread support for IPA characters in digital text, X-SAMPA has become largely obsolete.
