Word order

Word order (/wɜ:d ɔ:də/) refers to the arrangement of words in a phrase, clause, or sentence. It plays an important part in determining meaning in English, as opposed to some other languages, such as Spanish, where inflection may play a more important role.

English generally follows the following patterns:

Word order Example(s)
SV word order I eat
SVO word order I eat pizza
SAV word order I am eating
SAVO word order I am eating pizza
VS word order Are you?
VSO word order Are you eating?
ASV word order Are you eating?
ASVO word order Are you eating pizza?
