Why (/ˈwaɪ/) is an English wh- adverb covering reasons.[1]

Traditional grammar assigns why as an adverb, even though adverb is an open class of content words, and why is clearly a grammar word. It really belongs in the same class as other wh- words, including where and by, which can also adverbials.
