Where

From Teflpedia

Where (/ˈweə(r)/) is an English wh- word that refers to place. It acts either as an interrogative pronoun or interrogative adverb.

  • Where are we going? = adverb.
  • Where are we going to? = pronoun

The /r/ is typically pronounced in rhotic accents, but not in non-rhotic accents unless where is followed by a vowel sound, e.g. where is it? (/ˈweər ɪz ɪt/)

In accents with the ᴡɪɴᴇ–ᴡʜɪɴᴇ merger, it is a homophone with the verb wear.
