What's your name?

From Teflpedia

What's your name? is usually the first English question that is learnt by English language learners at absolute beginner level.

It is introduced as a means of obtaining the answer "My name is...". So its language function is to enquire about someone's personal name as part of their personal details.

This can then be the basis of substitution, substituting other dependent possessive determiners to make "What's his name?", "What's her name?" and "What's my name?". But note the plural form "What are your names?"/"What are their names?" require conjugation with be.

They can also use this to ask other basic questions, e.g. "What's your phone number?", "What's your nationality?", "What's your email address?", "What's your date of birth?", "What's your job?". m
