The ’velum (plural: '’vela) or soft palate is part of the anatomy of the human mouth; it’s the soft bit of the roof of the mouth that’s at the back of the mouth and behind the hard palate.

A sound made with the velum is a velar consonant, English has /k/, /g/ and /ŋ/.
