True friend

From Teflpedia

A true friend (/tru: frend/) is the opposite of a false friend. That is, it is a word found in two (or more) languages that are cognates with the same (or at least similar) meanings.

French is the language with the highest number of true friends with English; hence this may be commonly known by the French term vrai ami (m; plural vrais amis).

Contrast false friend, and fair-weather friend.
