To-infinitive

From Teflpedia

A to-infinitive or full infinitive is an English infinitive that consists of two words; the infinitive particle to and the base form.

For example: “I want to play.”

The to-infinitive is one of two types of English infinitive; the other being the bare infinitive.

Note that most (all?) other Indo-European languages only have one infinitive form.

All lexical verbs have to-infinitives; but full modal verbs lack them.

To infinitives can be used as infinitives of purpose and infinitive of result. They can also be used as subjects (infinitive subjects).

A to-infinitive may be split to become a split infinitive.
