United States

From Teflpedia

The United States is a country in North America.

The name of the country[edit | edit source]

Despite being a plural, the name United States is usually treated as singular.

It’s often referred to as “America” - though not without potential geographic ambiguities. The demonym is “American,” though this does not translate well to some other languages, where America is referred to by the equivalent of *“United Statesian.”

English and EFL in the USA[edit | edit source]

In the US, English, specifically American English, is the majority language. However, it isn’t an official language. It is however the de facto language of government, etc.

English is taught as a first language to native speakers. It is also taught as a second language to immigrants from all around the world. The largest group of these immigrants is Spanish-speaking.
