Spill is an English verb meaning "(to cause something) to spread out or makes a mess; to accidentally pour"[1]

Spill is an ambiregular verb - it has the third person form “spills", the -ing form “spilling", and a regular preterite and past participle “spilled", but also an irregular preterite and past participle “spilt.” Spilled tends to be preferred in American English whereas “spilt" tends to be preferred in British English.

Spill is an ergative verb; when used transitively it is the object that makes a mess, when used intransitively it is the subject that makes a mess.

Spill is used in some idioms, including “spill the beans", and “don't cry over spilt milk.”
