Spelling (system)

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from Spelt)

Spelling (/ˈspelɪŋ(g)/) is the component of orthography that involves forming words with letters in a standard manner. It is a key component of both writing and reading. English is spelt using English spelling.

General overview[edit | edit source]

In many languages, including English, the alphabetic principle establishes a correspondence between pronunciation and spelling. Words are spelt according to various applicable spelling rules. Words that follow these rules correspond to regular spelling. However, there may also be words that do not closely follow rules and are irregular spellings.

Spelling is typically standardised as part of language standardisation. English spelling therefore has been standardised. Nevertheless, spelling change can and does occur. Advocacy of spelling change is spelling reform.

Writers, including many English language learners, may make spelling mistakes whilst writing.

Homographs are different words that have the same spelling.

English spelling[edit | edit source]

English spelling has been standardised. English uses the Latin alphabet. English has rather a lot of irregular spellings.

Pedagogy[edit | edit source]

Learners may be taught spelling rules. Since English has many irregular spellings, the spellings of these words have to be learnt by learners.

Learners’ spelling may be tested using spelling tests.

Learners often struggle with spelling, but especially those with dyslexia.
