Soft G
From Teflpedia
Soft G is the use of the letter G to represent a dge phoneme /ʤ/ or a zh phoneme /ʒ/ sound.
It is “soft" because it represents an affricate sound rather than a plosive.
The spelling patterns ⟨ge⟩ and ⟨gi⟩ can either be soft or hard. Soft ⟨ge⟩ words include gel, gem, etc. Soft ⟨gi⟩ words include giant,
G is softened by magic E when it splits vowel digraphs, e.g. cage, wage, huge, etc.
⟨ga⟩ and ⟨gu⟩ are usually hard. But margarine is an exception (it’s soft — geddit?)
-age may be /ʒ/ in French-to-English loans, e.g. fromage, garage, etc.
