Soft C

From Teflpedia

Soft C involves the use of the letter C as a soft letter to represent an S phoneme /s/, or a Sh phoneme /ʃ/.

It is “soft” because it represents a sibilant rather than a plosive.

C is always soft when followed by E (⟨ce⟩)[1], and I (⟨ci⟩).[2] For example, cease and circle.

C can be softened by magic E (and magic Y); compare spic and spice, mac and mace, etc, and words like icy and lacy, etc.

In some words, it’s sh phoneme, e.g. associate, ocean, etc.

Contrast hard C, and soft G.
