Sigma is a letter of the Greek alphabet, equivalent to the Latin alphabet letter S.
Note that there are two lower case forms; σ and ς. Why?
In mathematics, the upper case Σ is used to represent the sum of numbers.
In statistics, the lower case σ is used to represent the standard deviation of a population (population standard deviation).
