Sight word
From Teflpedia
A sight word (/saɪtwɜ:d/) is a word that on being read, a reader recognises the whole word.[1] Due to irregular spelling, it may be better to recognise many irregularly spelt words as sight words than try to decode them using phonics.
English sightwords fall into two main categories:
- Very common words, e.g. the, to, of, for, and, is, are, have, has etc. These may be phonetic words (e.g. in), or non-phonetic words (e.g. have).
- Moderately common non-phonetic words, e.g. bread, people, , etc.
