A short vowel is a monophthong vowel sound that’s pronounced quickly. Contrast long vowel.

In phonemic notation, a monophthong without a triangular colon (:) is short.

British short vowels are /ɪ/, /ʊ/, /e/, /ə/, /æ/, /ʌ/, /ɒ/.

Short vowels are typically represented in regular spelling by single vowel letters; A for /æ/, E for /e/ I for /ɪ/,O for /ɒ/ and U for /ʊ/ and /ʌ/. The schwa is a special case. However, irregular spelling may see them represented by 2 or 3 letters.
