Disambiguation see lexical set

Set (/set/) is an English word that means verbally primarily "to put something down, to rest". It's etymologically a bit messy and unclear, but it likely related to sit and seat.

Set is an uninflected irregular verb; it has the third person form "sets" (/sets/), the -ing form "setting" (spelt with a double T), and an irregular uninflected preterite and past participle, "set" (/set/). The latter two may be over-regularised to *"setted".

Set is generally used transitively; one has to set something. It can however be used intransitively in the sense "to solidify".

There is a phrasal verb "set out".
