A semi-modal (auxiliary) verb is a verb that expresses modality, and acts as an auxiliary verb, but is not a full modal verb, and has some but not all of the properties of a full modal verb.

Semi-modal verbs in English include dare be going to, have to, have got to, get used to, need, used to, had better and ought to.
