Roman numeral

From Teflpedia

A Roman numeral is a numeral in the system used by the Romans.

Roman numerals are often used for secondary or tertiary numbering, to avoid confusion with Arabic numerals.

They may be written in upper case or lower case.

The upper case numerals are: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, etc. The lower case numerals are: i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi, vii, xiii, ix, x, xi, xii, xiii, xiv, xv, xvi, xvii, xviii, xix, xx, etc.

There are separate Unicode symbols; Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅶ, Ⅷ, Ⅸ, Ⅹ, Ⅺ, Ⅻ, Ⅼ, Ⅽ, Ⅾ, Ⅿ, and lower case ⅰ, ⅱ, ⅲ, ⅳ, ⅴ, ⅵ, ⅶ, ⅷ, ⅸ, ⅹ, ⅺ, ⅻ, ⅼ, ⅽ, ⅾ, ⅿ.

They may represent cardinal numbers or ordinal numbers. Particularly in the case of regnal names, e.g. Elizabeth II would be read as “Elizabeth the Second.” This wording is often not obvious to EFL learners.
