Regularisation

From Teflpedia
(Redirected from Regularization)

Regularisation (/ˌregjələraɪˈzeɪʃən/) is form of language change in which regular language rules are increasingly applied to irregularities by speakers, until the irregular form drops out of use.

In the first stage, the regular rule application is an innovation and may be considered at best non-standard and at worst an error, in the second stage the two forms may co-exist alongside each other, and in the third stage the original irregularity is considered archaic, non-standard or an error.

Do not confuse it with Over-regularisation by language learners.
