Reflexive/emphatic case
From Teflpedia
via: Reflexive case
The reflexive case /rəˈflek.sɪv ˈkeɪs/ is a pronoun case found in English and some related languages.
This is typically used for the object of a verb when the subject and object are identical. In English, we tend to use reflexive pronouns to express this. For example, "myself" in:
- I hit myself.
Indeed, sentences like #the man hit the man sound weird.
Reciprocal pronouns could probably also be analysed as reflexive case, though equally as accusative.
Beware also, that non-standard usage of reflexive pronouns where the accusative case would probably be better is common.
