A recipient is a semantic role of someone (or something) that receives something as a result of an action.

For example, in "Alice sent a letter to Bob", Bob is the recipient.

In English, the recipient is typically expressed by the indirect object of a clause, e.g.

A distinction may sometimes be made between a recipient and a beneficiary, (e.g. I brought a present for my wife).
