A proverb (/prɒvɜ:b/) is a simple, concrete, traditional saying that expresses a truth based on common sense or experience.[1]

Native speakers typically know many proverbs, and many English proverbs have direct equivalents in other country’s cultures. The meanings of non-idiomatic proverbs may be decoded. They however provide a special challenge for learners.

Paremiology is the study of proverbs.

Idiomatic proverbs or proverbial idioms present a special case of being both a proverb and an idiom.
