Primary second language

A primary second language, primary L2 or main second language is either:

• An individual user's main L2, if there are further foreign languages they can speak.
• The main L2 that is taught within a particular country or region. English is the primary second language worldwide, with various local exceptions.

Note:

• French is the primary second language in the UK.
• Spanish is the primary second language in the United States as a whole.
