A doctorate is an academic degree; specifically it requires research, and typically involves 3 years full time research.
A doctorate qualifies the holder to teach at university level in the degree’s field. It is possible to obtain doctorates in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and related fields, e.g. language acquisition studies. However, these are generally not necessary for most teaching jobs.
A doctorate is at level 8 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework.
