Over‑regularisation

From Teflpedia

Over‑regularisation is the noted tendency for language learners — both first language learners (especially young children) and second language learners — to apply regular language rules incorrectly to irregularities.

Most commonly, this occurs in English:

  1. With irregular plurals, e.g. *two mouses, *three sheeps, etc.
  2. With irregular lexical verbs, e.g. *I goed home.

Over-regularisations can generally be understood, and in real life the listener may ignore errors and not correct. Recasting can be used to correct learners.
