Placement test

(Redirected from Online placement test)

A placement test (/ˈpleɪsmən(t )ˈtest/), sometimes level-placement test is a test designed to determine a student's language proficiency level, e.g. of English. These are typically administered before a student starts a course, so that the students can be grouped into classes according to ability.

These can be done on a computer or with pen and paper.

They are low-stakes tests because any invalidity or unreliability in them can usually be rectified later by moving an overperforming or underperforming student into a different class. They also can be reused, unlike other types of exams. Cheating should not generally be a problem, but it may be a good idea to explain to students that cheating will only result in misplacement, making classes too difficult, confusing, ineffective and boring.

Because the purpose is to place students into classes, gradation of the tests can be fairly coarse.

An example would be the Anglia Examinations free one online [1]
