Numerical quantifier

From Teflpedia

A numerical quantifier is a quantifier that consists of a number.

Form[edit | edit source]

English uses cardinal numbers for this purpose.

For example:

  • Mrs Hills has got six cats.

The number occupies the determiner slot. They can only determine countable nouns, and not uncountable nouns.

Appropriacy[edit | edit source]

Numerical quantifiers may be written as words or as Arabic numerals. It is largely a matter of style as to which is preferred. Larger numbers are generally written as numerals, whereas smaller numbers are often written as words.
