No sooner

From Teflpedia

No sooner is an English lexical-grammatical structure.[1]

This is used to indicate that one event occurred immediately after the second.

This is typically used in the past perfect, and usually followed by "than" plus past tense without a perfect aspect (i.e. past simple or past continuous)

  • "No sooner had I closed the door than the phone rang."

It's possible to use "hardly" or "scarcely", in to replace "no sooner". In this case, they are all fronted adverbials.
