Negative polar question

From Teflpedia

A negative polar question is a polar question that is a negative question; it therefore uses the negative polarity.

In English, for example, :

  • "Don’t you like sprouts?"

Negative polar questions can be slightly ambiguous if either (1) answered with a very short answer, i.e. "yes" or "no", or (2) answered with a short answer using the auxiliary verb. For example, to the question "Don’t you like sprouts?" the answer "no" could either mean "No, I love them" or "No, I hate them". Consequently, speakers tend to avoid very short answers and short answers to negative questions, and instead give the long answer.
